This is a black habutae haori (a type of Japanese jacket) with the five crests of Maruni Mogi (a family crest). The origin is unknown, but it is likely habutae woven in Fukui Prefecture. While I am also listing habutae kimonos and haori from Gosen, compared to those habutae, this fabric feels slightly thinner. However, this makes it very soft to the touch, bringing out the characteristic qualities of habutae. It is a plain weave fabric where the warp and weft threads interlace. While standard plain weave uses one warp thread of the same thickness as the weft thread, habutae uses two thin warp threads, resulting in a soft, light, and lustrous fabric. The lining (shoulder lining) is made of white habutae. Photos 11 and 12 show the habutae of the shoulder lining, and photos 17 and 18 show enlarged views of the warp and weft structure of the outer fabric. The points where the two warp threads meet are difficult to see. (These were taken with a USB microscope.) The name habutae is said to come from the fact that two warp threads are passed through each heddle of the loom. Both the outer fabric and lining are made of pure silk habutae. (Photos 11, 13, 15) There are stains on the front and back of the left sleeve on the lining. If the metal fitting is visible, it detracts from the formality of the garment. It is said that visible metal fittings should be avoided, especially in formal settings.
